NMN Cocktail Therapy Improved Symptomatic COVID-19 Individuals, a Clinical Study.

nmn cocktail research study cover

NAD+ is a vital component of cellular energy production and health maintenance, and the chemical nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) is a potential anti-aging drug that raises NAD+ levels. It has been studied with experiments with mice, increasing levels of NAD+ and NMN, the precursor to NAD+, recovered age-related declines in kidney, liver, brain, vascular, and immune system function. According to certain studies, increasing NAD+ levels may also improve the immune response to diseases like SARS-CoV-2. Various methods have been studied to date to find the best and most effective method to treat Covid with NMN supplement.

Using an NMN cocktail to treat elderly SARS-CoV-2 infected patients, Huizenga and colleagues discovered rapid and dramatic changes in clinical parameters, which he published in a paper. The study was published in Sep 2022 and entitled, Dramatic Clinical Improvement in Nine Consecutive Acutely Ill Elderly COVID-19 Patients Treated with a Nicotinamide Mononucleotide Cocktail.

NMN Cocktail Effects on Covid Patients.

Ten consecutive unwell suspected SARS-CoV-2 infected patients over 50 were treated with nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN), betaine, sodium chloride, and zinc sulfate (NMN cocktail). 83 cc of an NMN cocktail mixed with 400 cc of water was given to COVID-19 infected individuals twice daily before breakfast and supper in Huizenga’s study. The cocktail contained undetermined doses of over-the-counter NMN and three boosters Huizenga believes may maximize the activity of NAD+-dependent proteins called sirtuins. The NMN cocktail also had sugar beet betaine to counter NAD+ breakdown or inhibition, sodium chloride to accelerate NMN absorption in the body, and zinc to increase the activity of Nrf2, a protein that protects cells from harm or inflammation.

Nine COVID-19-infected individuals averaged 65 years old were studied. Two had diabetes, five had pre-diabetes, two had heart disease, three used high blood pressure medicine, and six were overweight. All nine patients were bedridden with fever, cough, and lethargy. Six of the nine patients experienced anosmia (disturbance of the sense of smell), and five had diarrhea. The researchers did not include untreated SARS-CoV-2-infected individuals in their research comparing treated and untreated groups.

Pre-Treatment Characteristics of study participants

Clinical Improvement in Symptoms.

Five to thirty-four days following the onset of COVID-19 symptoms, Huizenga began delivering the NMN cocktail to individuals exhibiting signs of the disease. Although four of the nine patients were critically ill, the NMN cocktail resulted in fast clinical improvement, including fever suppression in a few days. Importantly, none of the patients needed to be transferred to a hospital’s intensive care unit after treatment. The NMN cocktail resulted in rapid clinical and laboratory improvement.

Outcomes. The NMN cocktail reduced inflammatory indicators and white blood cell (lymphocyte) counts in patients’ blood within two to three days.

Adverse Side Effects:

Seven participants did not experience any negative side effects as a result of the study. Two patients had short-term, caffeine-like mood fluctuations after taking the NMN cocktail, although these were alleviated after three days of treatment by discontinuing the treatment. There were no new symptoms or abnormalities in the patient’s blood or urine.

The study concluded with remarks from researcher that this recent study found antibody levels peak three weeks after the initial infection and afterwards rapidly fall, indicating natural or vaccine-induced long-lasting immunity may be difficult to achieve. NAD+ precursors increase depleted NAD+ levels, which may enhance anti-viral defiance mechanisms and mitigate anti-viral inflammatory collateral damage. We must develop, implement, and conclude statistically valid studies of the most promising medicines. NMN with and without boosters merits more research in older patients with difficult COVID-19 since this treatment has a clear molecular explanation for efficacy, may be safely delivered orally at home and in critically sick hospitalized patients.
